Discussion Chateau de Fontainebleau Commentary

"The chateau was built from 1528 onwards around the keep of a small medieval chateau, the work being carried out in several stages that lasted until the 18th century; hence the irregularity in plan and lack of unity in style. Even so, the initial plan, which was probably the result of successive decisions under Fran峯is I, was largely adhered to. The Gallery of Fran峯is I, with its frescoes framed in stucco by Rosso, of between 1522 and 1540, is the first great decorated gallery built in France."

—John Julius Norwich. The World Atlas of Architecture. p287.
